Septic System Dos and Don'ts
- DO have your tank pumped out every two to three years.
- DO keep a record of pumping, inspections, and maintenance.
- DO conserve water by repairing dripping faucets and leaking toilets.
- DO learn the location and layout of your septic system and drainfield.
- DO divert roof drains and surface water from driveways and hillsides away from your septic system.
- DO keep vehicles away from the septic tank or drainfield areas.
- DON'T make or allow repairs to your septic system without obtaining the required health department permit.
- DON'T use commercial septic additives.
- DON'T flush nondegradables down your toilet. Some examples are coffee grounds, grease, plastic, bones, kitty litter,
cigarette butts, and personal hygiene products.
- DON'T flush harmful chemicals like drain cleaners, solvents, paint, bleach, or floor/sink cleaners down your toilet
or drains. They can kill the natural bacteria that treats your wastewater.
- DON'T use a garbage disposal.
